England were two wickets deep into a two-day Test win when the Edgbaston sky did what Pakistan’s batting could not. Ollie Robinson had taken out Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique inside four deliveries, Pakistan were 0-2 and 320 behind, and the umpires had permission to play until 19:00 to force a result. At 17:07 BST the rain came instead, and the tourists survived to Friday on 52-2.
It was the second and final intervention of the day, and the only thing that has slowed England down in this series. Pakistan, dismissed for 133 on Wednesday, are still 268 runs from making England bat again in the third Rothesay Test — with Joe Root’s side already 2-0 up and a clean sweep now a matter of formality rather than doubt.
Robinson’s four balls, then the weather
Robinson’s opening spell was the sort of burst that turns a long day into a short one. Ayub, recalled at the top of the order without recent first-class cricket behind him, was gone first ball for his second duck of the match, having lasted 10 deliveries in the first innings. Shafique followed for nought three balls later. Robinson finished the abbreviated innings with 2-10 from six overs.
Azan Awais and Shan Masood then did the only thing available to them: they survived. Their unbroken third-wicket stand of 52 occupied 12.4 overs and dragged Pakistan out of the immediate humiliation of 0-2, Awais unbeaten on 29 from 30 balls, Masood on 21 from 42. Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson went wicketless in short spells before the covers came on.
The two-day possibility was real rather than rhetorical. Pakistan have not passed 200 in a first innings on this tour and have not batted more than 51 overs in any innings in the series. Nine wickets in a session and a half is a big ask; against this batting order in these conditions, it was not a fanciful one. England’s last two-day Test win came at Headingley in 2000, when West Indies were bowled out for 61 — their first inside two days since beating South Africa at Old Trafford in 1912.
453 without a hundred
England resumed on 156-4, a lead of just 23, and added 297 in a single day’s batting to be bowled out for 453 in 89 overs. Nobody made a century. Five players passed fifty.

The shape of that list matters more than any single innings in it. Positions seven to eleven contributed 185 of England’s 453 — roughly two-fifths of the total — which is a damning statistic for a bowling attack that had already done the hard part by removing the top order cheaply. Razaullah, on Test debut, took 4-148 from 23 overs and will have learned more about the modern English lower order in one afternoon than most bowlers manage in a career. Mohammad Imran took 2-47, Mohammad Ali 2-92 and Mohammad Abbas 1-95.
England have now gone a full home series without an individual hundred and won it at a canter regardless. That is either evidence of a batting culture that no longer needs one, or evidence of how far Pakistan’s attack has fallen short. Both readings are available.
A sweep, and what it settles
England won at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs and at Lord’s by 194. A third win completes a 3-0 sweep in Root’s first home summer since taking the Test captaincy back, and it will be recorded as the most emphatic result of his second spell in the job. Josh Tongue’s 4-42 on the opening day set up this match; the batting simply made it unrecoverable.
For Pakistan, the tour has produced five consecutive first-innings totals under 200 and no meaningful passage of resistance. The selection of Ayub without red-ball preparation, four changes to the side for this Test, and a debutant asked to bowl 23 overs while the lead ballooned all point to the same problem: a squad being reshuffled rather than rebuilt, in conditions that punish uncertainty faster than any other in the game.
Play resumes on Friday. England need eight wickets, Pakistan need 268 runs simply to level the match, and the forecast is now the only variable with anything left to say.
