Essex have signed Laurie Evans from Surrey on a one-year white-ball contract, handing Chris Silverwood one of the most travelled T20 batters in the county game as the club chases a Blast trophy it has not held since 2019.
Evans, who turned 39 on 12 October, leaves the Kia Oval this winter after 107 appearances across two spells and joins Essex from the 2027 season, taking shirt number 32. The deal is white-ball by default but carries an option for him to play County Championship cricket.
He arrives with 382 T20 matches behind him — 7,765 runs at 28.23 with 44 half-centuries and three hundreds since his Surrey debut in 2009 — and with a Big Bash League winner’s medal from January, when Perth Scorchers beat Sydney Sixers by six wickets to claim a record sixth title.
A franchise passport and a career-best 118 not out
Evans has built his reputation on the global circuit rather than in England’s Test-match conversation. He was named in England training groups in 2020 but never won a cap. What he has instead is a CV almost no English domestic batter can match:
- Perth Scorchers, including 76 from 41 balls in the 2022 BBL final
- Barbados Royals and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean
- Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators in the PSL
- Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Colombo Kings and Rajshahi Kings
- Oval Invincibles, Manchester Originals and Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred
His best domestic season came in 2023, when he made 563 Vitality Blast runs at a strike rate of 161.78. That summer also produced his career-best 118 not out from 60 balls against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens, an innings of 12 fours and six sixes that remains the highest T20 score made at the ground.
The red-ball record is slimmer but not negligible: 73 first-class matches, 3,495 runs at 29.36, six centuries and a top score of 213 not out. In 2015 he and Tim Ambrose added 327 against Sussex, still a Warwickshire record for the sixth wicket. That is the pedigree behind the Championship clause in his Essex contract, even if the club’s primary interest is clearly the shorter formats.
Why Surrey let him go
The split appears to have been mutual, and it followed a flat summer. Evans produced flickers in 2026 — 40 from 23 balls against Essex at the start of July, 34 from 21 against Middlesex in May, and 40 from 34 in a 101-run opening stand with Jason Roy in the quarter-final — but no innings that settled his place at the top of a deep Surrey order. Surrey finished second in the South Group on 28 points from 12 matches, then fell at home to Nottinghamshire in the quarter-final as Will Haynes made 75 not out.
“During the summer I came to the realisation that it was the right time for me to move on — both personally and for the club,” Evans said. He thanked Surrey “for all they have given me in my career, from when I joined the club as a boy to leaving now”, and singled out being awarded his county cap alongside Chris Jordan in 2025 as “one of the special moments of my career”.
Surrey’s director of men’s cricket Alec Stewart was similarly measured: “We respect Laurie’s decision to move to Essex, and we thank him for his years of dedicated service to the club.”
What it means for Essex going forward
Essex do not need reminding where their 2026 ended. They qualified for the quarter-finals as the best third-placed side — 7-5 in the South Group, 28 points, net run rate 0.354 — then were dismantled at Hampshire, who posted 211-3 through James Vince’s 125 before Essex were held to 136-9 and beaten by 75 runs. Northamptonshire went on to win the title.
The Championship season was harder still. Essex finished eighth in Division One with four wins from 14 matches and 136 points, surviving only because Leicestershire and Hampshire went down. A squad in that position can reasonably be accused of needing young batters to grow rather than a 39-year-old on a one-year deal — and that is the fair question about this signing.
Silverwood’s answer is that the two aims are the same thing. “Laurie has been part of successful teams around the world, bringing an exciting, attacking brand of cricket alongside a wealth of experience,” the Essex director of cricket said, adding that it “will be invaluable in supporting the development of our younger players”.
Evans framed it the same way. “I have been fortunate enough to play in different environments around the world, and I hope that I can bring that experience into the Essex dressing room,” he said. “It’s a county with a proud history, and I’m looking forward to getting started and contributing to what we want to achieve as a team.”
Judged on 2026 alone, this is a modest piece of recruitment. Judged on what Essex were missing in that Southampton quarter-final — a top-order batter who has chased 200 before, in front of crowds far larger than Chelmsford’s — it is a logical one. Evans will be 39 when the 2027 Blast begins, with one summer to prove the move was worth making for both sides.

Two notes on sourcing: the Hello Rayo report dates the Scorchers’ BBL title to January 2025, but the Essex release and the BBL final scorecard both confirm 25 January 2026 — I used the latter. I also left out the Birmingham Bears’ 2014 Blast win: Evans was at Warwickshire that season, but I could not confirm he featured in the final.
