Surrey sign England all-rounder Kemp on multi-year deal

Freya Kemp’s 4-22 against Sri Lanka in England’s opening match of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup stood as the best bowling return any England player produced all tournament. Surrey have decided that ceiling is worth a long-term bet. The 21-year-old all-rounder has signed a multi-year deal at the Kia Oval, arriving from Hampshire for the start of the 2027 season.

Surrey have not disclosed the length of the contract, describing it only as multi-year. Kemp will complete her commitments at Hampshire before the move takes effect, joining a Surrey squad that already contains England batters Alice Capsey and captain Bryony Smith.

A London player coming home

Kemp was born in London and made her senior debut in the Women’s T20 Cup at 14, initially with Sussex, before two seasons in the Hampshire and Southern Vipers system. The geography mattered in the decision.

“The opportunity to play for Surrey and be closer to home was one I couldn’t turn down,” she said. “I’m really excited to join Surrey. They are a huge club and have an amazing squad. Being able to call the Kia Oval home is going to be really special.”

She was careful to mark the exit properly. “I am very grateful for my time at Hampshire, who have played a key role in my development to get where I am today,” Kemp said. “I will look back on my time at Hampshire with great fondness and happiness.”

That development was interrupted twice. Kemp was first diagnosed with a stress fracture in her back in December 2022, aged 17, shortly after England’s tour of the West Indies. A second fracture followed. In total she spent 14 months unable to bowl competitively, and her return to England colours in 2026 was her first international appearance since the 2025 Ashes tour of Australia. For a bowling all-rounder still in her teens at the time, it was the kind of sequence that ends careers rather than shapes them.

The World Cup that reset her value

Kemp spent the enforced time away from bowling rebuilding her batting, and the numbers from 2026 suggest the investment paid. At the T20 World Cup she averaged 45 with a strike rate of 157.89 — the profile of a middle-order accelerator rather than a bowler who bats. Combined with the Sri Lanka return, it made her one of the few England players to leave the tournament with an enhanced reputation.

England did not. Australia beat them by seven wickets in the final at Lord’s on 5 July, chasing 151 inside 17.1 overs in front of a crowd of 28,000, with Beth Mooney making 64 from 49 balls. It was Australia’s record seventh title and a seventh England near-miss that renewed questions about the depth beneath the senior batting order.

What Surrey are buying

The ECB’s tiered women’s structure has created a genuine transfer market, and Surrey are positioned to win most of the auctions they enter: a Tier 1 licence, the Kia Oval, and a London catchment that no rival county can match. Kemp is the clearest evidence yet that the pull works on established internationals rather than just on academy players.

“The experience she has gained across international, franchise and domestic cricket will be a huge asset,” said Emma Calvert, Surrey’s director of women’s cricket.

Surrey need it. They reached the Metro Bank One Day Cup semi-finals in 2026 but finished outside the honours in a Women’s T20 Blast Tier 1 won by The Blaze, with a tie against Hampshire Hawks and a defeat by Somerset among the results that cost them. A seam-bowling all-rounder who can strike at better than 150 addresses both problems in one signing.

Hampshire lose their highest-profile developing asset with only their role in her rehabilitation to show for it. For Kemp, the timing points forward: a 2027 arrival gives her two full domestic seasons at a Tier 1 club before the next Ashes cycle and T20 cricket’s return to the Olympic programme at Los Angeles 2028.

The back will always be the caveat. Everything else now looks like an asset appreciating in the right postcode.
