Lewis Hamilton was running third at Marina Bay with just over 20 laps remaining when Ferrari called both of its cars into the pits under a Virtual Safety Car. Charles Leclerc came in. Hamilton stayed out. He crossed the line sixth, 53.188 seconds behind Max Verstappen, and then delivered the radio message that defined the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix.
“Sorry boys. I let you down today with that strategy. My call, and I lost us valuable points.”
Verstappen led every lap from pole to win in 1:42:00.785 — his 73rd career victory, his first at Singapore, and Red Bull’s first here since 2022, all on his 250th grand prix start. Leclerc followed 7.335s back. But the podium’s third step went to Kimi Antonelli, and that is the result that reshaped the championship. The 20-year-old Italian leaves Singapore 102 points clear of Mercedes team-mate George Russell with six rounds left, and can be crowned world champion at the United States Grand Prix on 25 October.
The call that cost Ferrari a podium
Hamilton started on mediums, pitted on lap 19 for softs, and was managing a tyre set well past its useful life when Lance Stroll’s clutch failure triggered a VSC around lap 40. A stop under those conditions costs roughly half the usual time loss. Ferrari saw it immediately.
Hamilton did not take it. He later said he missed the pit entry; team principal Frederic Vasseur was unambiguous about what had been asked.
“We called him, we called them both to pit,” Vasseur said. “It was crystal clear on the radio.”
Vasseur estimated Hamilton would have finished second or third had he stopped. Instead, on tyres with nothing left, he was swallowed by Antonelli, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the closing laps. The Norris pass produced the race’s one stewarding question — both cars ran wide at Turn 1 — but the stewards took no further action, noting that “both cars rejoined the track in the correct order” and that both subsequently lost out to Antonelli anyway.
Ferrari arrived at the weekend short of data after a wet Saturday sprint erased their tyre reading, which makes the error more forgivable in context and more expensive in points. Hamilton’s own championship position is now marginal: he sits third on 229, only eight clear of Verstappen on 221, with Leclerc on 215 behind him.
What Antonelli needs in Austin
The arithmetic at the Circuit of the Americas is specific rather than comfortable. With 150 points still available across the final six races, Antonelli must leave Texas 125 clear of everyone — the maximum any rival could score across the remaining five rounds.
- Antonelli must win the United States Grand Prix
- Russell must finish ninth or lower
- Hamilton must finish fifth or lower
A Russell ninth place would leave the Mercedes pair separated by exactly 125 points, and Antonelli takes the title on countback with eight wins to Russell’s three. Verstappen is eliminated if Antonelli outscores him by six, which a victory guarantees. Leclerc and Norris — the reigning champion, currently running fourth in Singapore — need Antonelli to drop points simply to stay alive.
Anything short of a win and the fight carries on to Mexico. That is not a remote scenario: Antonelli collected a black-and-white flag for repeated track-limits violations at Turn 2 on Sunday, and has won eight races this season rather than every race.
A record 16 years old and a drought of 73 years
If Antonelli clinches at Austin he will be 20 years and 61 days old, demolishing Sebastian Vettel’s mark of 23 years and 134 days, set at Abu Dhabi in 2010. No driver has come close since. He would also be the first Italian drivers’ champion since Alberto Ascari’s second title in 1953 — a 73-year gap in a country that has never stopped producing teams, engines and circuits, only champions.
Doing it with five rounds to spare would put him one race shy of Michael Schumacher’s 2002 record for the earliest clinch in a season.
Mercedes have managed the symmetry awkwardly all year. Russell started 19th in Singapore after an engine penalty and recovered to ninth — a genuinely strong drive that, in the championship context, was indistinguishable from capitulation. He needs Antonelli to fail at four separate circuits to make the end of the season matter.
For Hamilton, Austin offers the narrower consolation of a fight for third in the standings against Verstappen, eight points away, at a track where he has won six times. He will also be sitting in a Ferrari strategy briefing with one conversation still to finish.
