Morgan Gibbs-White is set to join up with England on Monday as a replacement for Cole Palmer, who is withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel’s squad with a minor muscle injury barely 72 hours after being recalled.
The Nottingham Forest playmaker was left out when Tuchel named his 27-man squad on 18 September, then spent Saturday afternoon making the omission look increasingly difficult to defend: an assist for Dan Ndoye’s opener and a converted penalty in Forest’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool. Palmer, meanwhile, played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday night and has since been flagged with a muscle problem that rules him out of a four-match international window.
Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also expected to pull out, with Newcastle’s Tino Livramento a doubt, leaving Tuchel reshaping a squad built for the biggest fixture of his post-World Cup calendar — Spain at a sold-out Wembley on Saturday.
The same phone call, 18 months on
There is a symmetry here that Tuchel will not have missed. In March 2025, in his very first England squad, the German head coach left Gibbs-White out, was criticised heavily for it, and then called him up days later as an injury replacement. The message he sent the player has since become part of the folklore around Tuchel’s man-management: “Are you still upset with me, or do you want to come and join us and fancy training tomorrow?”
Gibbs-White’s response then was measured. “Obviously I was upset. Yeah, a little bit disappointed. But when he told me, I respected his decision,” he said, adding that while he felt he had “done enough to get the call-up”, the manager makes the decisions.
Eighteen months later the pattern has repeated almost exactly, and the underlying problem has not moved. Gibbs-White has six England caps. He has never started a senior international. Four of those appearances came under Tuchel, all as a late substitute, and his most recent was in October 2025, in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. For a 26-year-old who is arguably the most consistent English creator outside the elite clubs, that is a thin return.
Tuchel has at least acknowledged the case. He said last week that Gibbs-White had been “incredibly close” to selection — a phrase that reads differently now that the player is on his way to St George’s Park anyway.
Palmer’s recall unravels
The withdrawal is a heavier blow for Palmer than the injury itself suggests. The 24-year-old was one of the defining omissions of Tuchel’s summer, left out of the England squad that finished third at the 2026 World Cup, beating France in the third-place match the day before Spain edged Argentina in extra time in New Jersey.
His September recall was framed explicitly as a trial. Palmer has started six of Chelsea’s seven games this season and contributed four goals and two assists, and Tuchel made clear that the numbers were the point, saying Palmer needed to show “these kinds of numbers and performances” to justify the nomination and keep the shirt.
Now he gets none of it. A minor muscle problem, coming after a season repeatedly interrupted by fitness issues, means Palmer misses four matches against Spain, Czechia and Croatia — the precise sample Tuchel said he wanted to see. Chelsea will not mind the enforced rest. Palmer, trying to argue his way back into a World Cup-bronze squad that functioned perfectly well without him, will mind a great deal.
What it changes for England
England open their UEFA Nations League campaign against the world champions on 26 September at Wembley, then travel to Prague on 29 September, to Rijeka to face Croatia on 3 October, and host Czechia again on 6 October. Group A3 is the hardest draw in League A; only the winners advance to the March quarter-finals.
Tuchel’s attacking midfield options in this window now look like this:
- Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice as the fixed points in central midfield
- Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Morgan Rogers competing for the creative roles behind Harry Kane
- Elliot Anderson and Alex Scott offering younger, more functional alternatives
- Gibbs-White, who fits none of those categories neatly — and that is his argument
Against Spain, England will spend long spells without the ball, which historically has not suited Gibbs-White’s game. The Prague and Rijeka trips are where his case is best made. Four matches in 11 days will force rotation, and Tuchel has never previously had this much room to experiment in competitive fixtures.
Gibbs-White has now been called up twice as somebody else’s misfortune. At 26, with a World Cup cycle already begun and the squad that reached the semi-finals largely intact, the chances to change that framing are running short.
