Bryan Mbeumo put Manchester United ahead at Elland Road in the 35th minute. Sixteen minutes after the restart, Dominic Calvert-Lewin had levelled it, and by full time Michael Carrick’s side had stretched their winless run to six games in all competitions — the first time United have gone that long without a victory since 2019.

The 1-1 draw was United’s third consecutive 1-1 result in the Premier League, after Everton and Tottenham, and in all three Mbeumo had given them the lead. Three of the Cameroon forward’s four league goals this season have put United 1-0 up. None of them has been enough.

Everything a struggle for Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes endured one of his least productive afternoons in a United shirt, booked inside the first half for a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic and shooting wide when a better option existed. Rated 5/10 by The National — the lowest mark handed to any starter on either side — he spent the afternoon dropping deeper and deeper to find the ball as Leeds’ midfield squeezed the space in front of their back three.

  • Senne Lammens 7 — saved well from a Nico Elvedi header, no chance with the equaliser
  • Leny Yoro 7 — a hard afternoon physically, but he won nearly everything in the air
  • Harry Maguire 7 — combative in an intense first half, particularly against Calvert-Lewin
  • Lisandro Martinez 6 — stood up to the pressure but appeared to be carrying an injury; withdrawn at the break
  • Diogo Dalot 6 — an attacking right-back playing left-back, and it showed in both directions
  • Carlos Baleba 7 and Andrey Santos 7 — energetic and physically strong before fading after the hour
  • Youri Tielemans 7 — his cross from the right created the goal
  • Amad Diallo 6 — one superb delivery on the half-hour, little else; struggling to beat his man
  • Bryan Mbeumo 7 — headed wide unmarked, then finished cleanly from Tielemans’ cross
  • Noussair Mazraoui 5 (sub) — conceded the soft corner from which Leeds equalised

Calvert-Lewin keeps his Elland Road record going

Leeds’ equaliser came from the simplest of sources: a corner United should never have conceded, Muharemovic’s header across the face of goal, and Calvert-Lewin in the right place to control and finish from close range. It was his seventh goal in seven home league games, and it took him to 12 Premier League goals at Elland Road — the third-highest tally by any player at a single venue, behind Erling Haaland’s 19 at the Etihad and Igor Thiago’s 14.

  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin 8 — the finish, and relentless occupation of Maguire for 90 minutes
  • Jayden Bogle 8 — a constant outlet on the right with a steady supply of crosses
  • James Trafford 7 — beaten twice by Mbeumo efforts in the first half, only one of them counted
  • Tarik Muharemovic 7 — the assist, plus a composed afternoon on the ball
  • Ethan Ampadu 7 — the captain in the thick of it, booked late
  • Ao Tanaka 7 — a genuine nuisance, closing down relentlessly
  • Anton Stach 6 — wasted the clearest second-half chance with a poor final ball
  • James Justin 6 — caught out of position and outmuscled by Mbeumo for the goal
  • Lukas Nmecha 7 (sub) — gave Leeds a different kind of problem after coming on

The expected goals bore out Daniel Farke’s view that his side deserved more: Leeds 1.44 to United’s 0.91, with 1.19 of the home side’s total generated after the interval. Leeds had 21 touches in the opposition box to United’s 12. “We are slightly disappointed it is just a point,” Farke said.

Six games, and a week that is not getting easier

United sit 13th with six points from seven matches — their worst start to a league season since 1986-87. Carrick has won two of ten games in all competitions since the campaign began. The run includes a 2-2 draw at Everton, a home defeat by Manchester City, the Tottenham draw, and Tuesday’s 2-0 loss at Atletico Madrid, where Pablo Barrios scored inside 50 seconds and Yoro was sent off.

Carrick’s framing was defensive but not defeated. “I understand the situation doesn’t look great, but I have no doubts we can go on a good run,” he said. “A point is a point. It is a step forward for us.”

Maguire was blunter about where the gap lies: “You can’t question the togetherness, the spirit, the fight — we’ve got to show a bit more quality with the ball.”

Antonio Conte’s name is already circulating, though United are not expected to change manager mid-season and senior players have backed Carrick publicly. He was appointed permanently in May 2026 on a deal to June 2028 after replacing Ruben Amorim in January. The next test comes on Wednesday in the Champions League, away at Como — a fixture that, on this evidence, offers no obvious relief.
