Cut-price Leao interests Man Utd – Sunday’s gossip

Manchester United’s pursuit of a marquee forward has taken a fresh turn, with AC Milan reportedly willing to sanction the sale of Rafael Leao for a discount fee this summer. The Portugal winger, valued at more than £80m only twelve months ago, could be available for closer to £60m as Milan look to rebuild following a chastening domestic campaign in which they finished outside the Champions League places. Ruben Amorim, eager to inject pace and verticality into a United attack that managed just 44 Premier League goals last season, is understood to view the 26-year-old as the centrepiece of his summer recruitment drive.

Leao the headline act in United’s rebuild

Leao’s name has circulated around Old Trafford before, but the financial backdrop has shifted decisively. Milan, weighed down by Financial Fair Play obligations and the need to fund a squad overhaul under their new sporting director, are said to have privately accepted that the asking price cannot match the £150m release clause inserted into his 2023 contract extension. The Italian press, led by La Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere della Sera, indicate that offers in the region of £60m to £65m would be entertained.

For United, the calculation is more than just price. Leao registered 12 goals and eight assists in all competitions last season — modest output by his own standards — but his underlying numbers remain elite for a left-sided forward in Europe’s top five leagues. His ability to carry the ball into the final third, combined with a willingness to take defenders on in isolation, addresses two of Amorim’s most glaring tactical needs. United’s wide forwards produced the fewest successful take-ons of any club in the top half of the Premier League in 2025-26.

There are, however, caveats. Leao has been criticised in Milan for inconsistency in big matches, and his defensive contribution out of possession would need to evolve to fit Amorim’s 3-4-2-1, in which the wide attackers are expected to press aggressively and track full-backs. United’s recruitment team, led by Jason Wilcox, are believed to have already compiled extensive video analysis on whether Leao can adapt to the role currently occupied, with mixed results, by Alejandro Garnacho.

Bowen the alternative — and more than a back-up plan

Sunday’s gossip pages also link United with West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen, whose stock has risen sharply after a 19-goal season for a struggling Hammers side. The 29-year-old England international is understood to be available for around £55m, with West Ham bracing for an exodus following Graham Potter’s failure to lift the club beyond mid-table. Bowen has two years remaining on his contract and, according to The Sun on Sunday, would welcome a move to Old Trafford after being overlooked for the recent England squad announcement.

Bowen’s profile differs from Leao’s in instructive ways. He is right-footed, more direct in his runs in behind, and has a stronger record of arriving in the penalty area at the right moment — 27 of his 36 Premier League goals over the past two seasons have come from inside the 18-yard box. United’s interest is not framed as either/or. Sources close to the club suggest Amorim is targeting two new attacking signings, with Bowen viewed as a ready-made Premier League performer who carries none of the adaptation risk attached to a foreign import.

The wider summer picture at Old Trafford

Elsewhere in the Sunday papers, the picture around Manchester United’s window continues to widen:

  • Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres remains a target despite Arsenal’s reported pole position, with United exploring a structured deal involving add-ons.
  • Andre Onana’s future is under review following a difficult second season, with Inter Milan said to be monitoring developments.
  • Mason Greenwood, on loan at Marseille, is expected to be sold permanently this summer for a fee approaching £30m.
  • Chelsea are weighing a fresh bid for Alejandro Garnacho should United proceed with their interest in Leao or Bowen.

The strategic question for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS is whether a £180m outlay on Leao, a central midfielder and a striker is sustainable under Profit and Sustainability Rules following last season’s £113m loss. The sale of Greenwood, Garnacho and possibly Onana would offset much of the spend, but United’s wage bill — already the highest in the Premier League — leaves little margin for error.

For Amorim, who inherited a fractured squad in November and managed only a ninth-place finish, the summer represents the first window genuinely shaped by his own vision. Whether that vision begins with Leao, Bowen, or both, will define the trajectory of his first full season in charge.
