Max Dowman needed seven minutes at Portman Road to explain why Arsenal have spent two years arguing about how quickly to use him. Collecting the ball in midfield, the 16-year-old drove at Ipswich Town’s defensive line, shimmied past Cedric Kipre and rolled a finish into the bottom-left corner. Two minutes into the second half he did it again, controlling a deflected pass and finishing without fuss. Arsenal won 4-2 on Tuesday night, booked their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round — and Mikel Arteta spent his post-match media duties applying the brakes.
A brace on his first appearance of the season
It was Dowman’s first outing of the 2026-27 campaign, a point worth sitting with. Arteta had said before the tie that the teenager “will have his chance, he will have his minutes and he will have to earn them like anybody else.” Given the chance, Dowman took 420 seconds to open the scoring.
Noni Madueke volleyed Arsenal’s second on 16 minutes, Dowman restored the two-goal cushion at 47, and Mikel Merino made it 4-0 on 58. Ipswich’s reply was cosmetic: Anis Mehmeti pulled one back four minutes after Merino’s goal and Chuba Akpom converted in first-half stoppage time of the added minutes at the end. Gary O’Neil’s summary was unsentimental. “They didn’t have many shots,” the Ipswich manager said. “When they did, they all went in. We got punished by a very good, clinical side.”
Arteta’s praise was warm but bounded. “He was brilliant,” he said of Dowman. “Some of the individual actions he made to make the difference and to impact the game were outstanding. We know the talent, we need to look after him.” Then the qualifier that framed the entire night: “He’s 16 years old, and we need to be really cautious with that. We don’t want to stop him, we don’t want to put any brakes on him.”
The record books — and the cautionary tales inside them
Dowman, born on 31 December 2009, has been collecting landmarks at a rate that makes the caution understandable. His brace made him the second-youngest player to score in the League Cup for a Premier League club, at 16 years and 258 days. The two names ahead of and immediately behind him are instructive, because both are Arsenal’s:

The rest of Dowman’s résumé is already absurd for his age. He became the youngest player in Champions League history at 15 years and 308 days when he came on against Slavia Prague last November. In January he became the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer, at 16 years and 73 days, with a solo strike that settled a 2-0 win over Everton — beating James Vaughan’s long-standing mark by 197 days. By May he was the youngest player ever to win the title, at 16 years and 144 days, taking that record off Phil Foden.
Why Arsenal will still ration him
None of it guarantees him Premier League starts this autumn. Arteta’s stated concern is physical and situational rather than technical. “You don’t see that in this league,” he said of Dowman’s ability. “We really need to make sure every time we throw him in is in the right context, with the right preparation… we’re going to make sure that when we just throw him in there, he’s ready to handle that at every level.”
Tellingly, the quality Arteta singled out was not the dribbling. “That’s his biggest quality,” he said of Dowman’s defensive work rate. “Consistently to go through the game, every phase, with the demands that we put in them, to be able to do that is extremely difficult.” In Arteta’s system, out-of-possession discipline is the entry fee; the goals are the bonus.
There is a structural quirk working in Arsenal’s favour. Because of his age, Dowman does not occupy a place in the club’s 25-man Premier League squad registration, so he can be used without cost to the senior list — cup ties, late substitute appearances, whatever fits. With Ethan Nwaneri away on loan at Borussia Dortmund, the pathway has widened too.
The fourth-round draw follows Manchester United’s tie with Brighton, with those matches scheduled for the week commencing 26 October. Expect Dowman to feature. Expect Arteta to keep saying the same thing.
