Bukayo Saka had been on the pitch for barely two minutes when he answered his manager. Introduced at the Emirates just after Jurrien Timber broke Lille’s resistance on 64 minutes, the England forward slid the ball across for Eberechi Eze to make it 2-0 on 67, then scored Arsenal’s third himself four minutes later with a one-touch finish from Kai Havertz’s pass. Three goals in seven minutes and 18 seconds, a 3-0 win, and a direct reply to the challenge Mikel Arteta had set him in public 24 hours earlier.

Saka was not even supposed to play. He had been left out of the starting XI with illness, one of five changes Arteta made from the weekend win over Leeds, and the Arsenal manager admitted afterwards that his winger had been struggling for two days. “He wasn’t feeling that good today and yesterday,” Arteta said. “He had a bit of an illness but was really keen to contribute. He came on and made a huge impact and delivered with real quality.”

Seven minutes that broke Lille

For an hour, this was a stalemate. Lille’s best moment came on 21 minutes, when Ayase Ueda turned in Nabil Bentaleb’s shot after it struck Gabriel, only for the offside flag to go up and VAR to confirm the decision. Arsenal had the ball but not the angles, with Viktor Gyokeres isolated and taking just 12 touches before he was withdrawn.

Then Arteta emptied his bench. Havertz, Martin Odegaard and Saka came on together around the 64th minute, and the game turned inside a single spell. Timber opened the scoring from Noni Madueke’s delivery, Saka replaced Madueke and immediately created the second for Eze, and the third followed on 71. Lille did not register a shot on target — only the second time they have failed to do so in a Champions League match since records began in 2003-04.

Davide Ancelotti, the Lille head coach, identified the problem plainly. “With the players they always have on the bench, they can change the rhythm of the game,” he said. “For us it was difficult to keep up.” Arteta’s own verdict leaned on the same point: “It was a joy to watch the goals that we scored, three different players and a number of different players participating.”

‘I just killed you in the press conference’

The subplot was set on Monday, when Arteta told reporters that Saka’s output should be far higher than it is. “I think the numbers should go to score two or three per game,” he said. “That’s the mindset. And then if you score one, so be it, you score two, so be it, because he has the ability to score in many ways.” Arteta has shifted Saka’s starting position this season to get him closer to goal, reasoning that “the more volume we generate, the bigger the probability of him scoring more goals”.

Arteta also revealed how he squared the public demand with the player privately: “I said ‘Bukayo, I just killed you in the press conference, good luck tomorrow’.”

The raw numbers explain why the challenge was issued, and why the response mattered:

  • Four goals in nine appearances this season, three of them in six Premier League games — still Arsenal’s leading scorer
  • A career-best 20 goals in all competitions in 2023-24, including 16 in the Premier League
  • Five goals in his last four England matches, a scoring run that has outpaced his club form
  • 19 goals in European competition for Arsenal, second only to Thierry Henry’s 42
  • Nine Champions League assists, behind Henry (16) and Cesc Fabregas (14)

Bayern next, with a final to avenge

The win was Arsenal’s second from two in the league phase, following a 1-0 victory over Napoli in September, and extended a remarkable European sequence: 14 consecutive wins in the group stage or league phase, with nine clean sheets in that run. David Raya’s shutout was his 38th Champions League appearance for the club, equalling David Seaman’s record. The victory came on the day Arsenal’s life president Ken Friar died, and was dedicated to him.

Context sharpens all of it. Arsenal lost last season’s final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in Budapest, 1-1 after extra time, with Eze and Gabriel missing from the spot. The club has never won this competition. Arteta’s squad now faces eight matches in 25 days, starting with Bayern Munich away on 21 October — a fixture where a 20-minute cameo will not be enough, and where Saka will almost certainly start.
