Cristiano Ronaldo has ruled out retiring from international football while demanding that the Portuguese Football Federation discipline him for walking out of the national team’s camp in Copenhagen, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking his word.

In a statement published on Tuesday, eight days after he left the squad, the 41-year-old captain wrote: “The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I have already apologised, but I know that actions have consequences.” He asked to be judged “without mitigating factors” because he wears the armband.

Ronaldo also made clear his international career is not over. “If I’m physically fit, playing for my club – scoring goals, I hope – after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I’ll be available,” he said.

The two broken promises

Ronaldo’s account centres on an agreement he says he reached with Jesus, the 72-year-old who coached him at Al Nassr and succeeded Roberto Martínez in July after Portugal’s last-16 World Cup exit to Spain.

By Ronaldo’s version, the pair had settled on a plan under which he would sit out the Nations League double-header against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness. On the day of the Norway game in Oslo on 27 September, Ronaldo says Jesus told him he would instead get 30 minutes. He got none.

Portugal won 1-2 at the Ullevaal Stadion — João Félix opening the scoring, Erling Haaland equalising, Gonçalo Ramos settling it three minutes later — with Ronaldo an unused substitute for the full 90 minutes. “I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on,” he wrote. “The coach had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo says the two then met privately, and that Jesus agreed to tell his next news conference that the forward had never pushed for minutes and that the decision not to use him was the coach’s alone. That, Ronaldo says, did not happen — the second broken promise. Jesus has denied any such agreement existed.

Ronaldo trained alone in the gym on the Monday and Tuesday, carrying no injury, then left the camp on Wednesday 30 September after talks involving federation president Pedro Proença. “I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises,” he wrote.

Portugal kept winning without him

The sporting cost to Jesus has so far been nil. Portugal beat Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen on 1 October through João Cancelo, Ramos, Vitinha and Félix, then saw off Norway 2-1 at the Estádio do Dragão on 4 October, Ramos striking in the 79th minute after Kristoffer Ajer had put the visitors ahead.

That is four wins from four in League A Group 4 — 12 points, six clear of Denmark, with Wales and Norway on three. Jesus has yet to lose a competitive match in charge, which strengthens his hand considerably in a dispute with the most decorated player in his country’s history.

Proença has publicly backed the coach while leaving the door open to Ronaldo. “I’m not going to give those clarifications; these are perfectly normal conversations between coaches and players,” he said last week, adding: “Now that the four matches are over, we have the time and calm to sit down together and resolve the misunderstanding. Cristiano is part of our legacy, and he will always be here whenever the coach wants him.”

Under the FPF’s disciplinary code, a player who unjustifiably abandons national team duty faces a ban of between one and six months plus a fine. No sanction has been announced.

What it means for Portugal and for Ronaldo

The timing is the crux. A suspension at the lower end would keep Ronaldo available for November’s fixtures against Denmark and Wales. At the upper end, a six-month ban would carry him deep into 2027 and leave Jesus to build a Nations League and qualifying side without a player who has 146 international goals — more than any man in the sport’s history — from 234 caps.

Portugal have been here before. Ronaldo’s relationships with Fernando Santos and Martínez both frayed over minutes rather than form, and in Qatar in 2022 the federation was forced to deny he had threatened to leave the World Cup squad. What is different now is that the squad has demonstrably functioned without him, with Ramos and Félix sharing the goals Ronaldo once monopolised.

  • Jesus is contracted to the FPF until June 2030, covering the next World Cup cycle
  • Ronaldo remains under contract at Al Nassr, where Jesus managed him to the Saudi Pro League title
  • Portugal’s next matches: Denmark and Wales in the November window

Ronaldo has framed his return as conditional on three things: his fitness, his club form, and a punishment he has invited rather than resisted. The federation now has to decide how heavily to sanction a captain who asked for it.
