‘He could be happier’ – why is Estevao becoming Chelsea’s forgotten man?

Done. The article is below. I checked it against coverage published up to today, 29 October 2026.

Estevao Willian did not get off the bench at Anfield on Wednesday night. Chelsea drew 1-1 with Liverpool in the Carabao Cup and then lost the penalty shootout, and the 19-year-old Brazilian spent all of it as an unused substitute. Afterwards Xabi Alonso was asked about the teenager Chelsea had bought as a future superstar, and his answer was candid. “I understand his situation and that he could be happier for sure,” the Chelsea head coach said. “I’m sure that Este will have his moment. It’s my responsibility and we need to deal with that.”

The numbers make Alonso’s reassurance harder to believe. Estevao has played 47 minutes of Premier League football across Chelsea’s first eight league matches. His only starts this season have come in the Carabao Cup. Twelve months ago he was scoring the winner against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Now Chelsea look unsure what to do with him.

From match-winner to bit-part player

Estevao’s first season in England went better than most expected. Chelsea had agreed a deal with Palmeiras in 2024, reportedly worth up to around £51m including add-ons. He arrived in the summer of 2025 and scored eight goals with four assists in 36 appearances in all competitions. That included a stoppage-time winner against Liverpool and a dazzling solo goal in the Champions League win over Barcelona.

Injuries interrupted that season. A muscle problem kept him out in December, and a hamstring injury later ended his domestic campaign and ruled him out of Brazil’s World Cup squad. His Premier League record for the season was more modest: two goals and two assists from 22 appearances, totalling about 850 minutes.

Alonso says that recovery is still affecting him. In the Chelsea manager’s view, Estevao has not yet got back the physical edge the English game demands. “We know the game in England is really intense, and you need to be up for it,” he said. He also said in-game problems had dictated his changes at Anfield: Moises Caicedo was nursing “little problems” and Malo Gusto had cramp, which took away the room to bring Estevao on. “Trust me,” Alonso added. “I’m sure the season is going to be long and Este is going to play his role.”

A crowded field ahead of him

The fitness explanation is only part of the story. Estevao is competing in one of the most crowded attacking units in the Premier League, and the players ahead of him are performing.

  • Pedro Neto has four goals in 11 matches this season and has become a fixture on the right flank under Alonso.
  • Cole Palmer remains the club’s creative reference point.
  • Morgan Rogers scored Chelsea’s goal at Anfield and has quickly earned Alonso’s trust in the attacking midfield roles.
  • Geovany Quenda, also 19, is another young wide option competing for the same minutes.

Against Liverpool, Alonso started Neto, Danny Welbeck and Rogers in attack, a choice built on experience and work rate rather than flair. Joao Pedro is expected to miss a few weeks with a thigh injury, so there is a gap Estevao could fill. Even so, the manager has so far chosen other players.

Data from analytics firm SciSports puts it starkly. Estevao has Chelsea’s second-highest estimated transfer value, about €110.9m, behind only Caicedo. Yet the same model ranks 17 Chelsea players above him on current level, so his price and his place in the pecking order do not match.

Unrest, rumours and a contract to 2033

This is not a sudden problem. In early September, ESPN Brasil reported that Estevao was worried about his role under Alonso and would consider leaving in January if his opportunities stayed limited. The same report said he “makes it clear to those close to him that he likes the club and wants to stay”. There have also been reports that he was promised a central attacking role when Chelsea first recruited him.

Other clubs have noticed. Paris Saint-Germain are said to want attacking cover while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia recovers from a long-term injury. A 90min report relayed last week suggested Chelsea would rule out a permanent sale but might consider a loan. Barcelona have also been reported to be monitoring the situation.

Chelsea are in a strong negotiating position because Estevao is under contract until 2033. Earlier reports said club sources considered him untouchable. The real question is whether a loan would help his development or simply hand a rival a year of one of the best young players in world football.

What it means for Alonso and Chelsea

Chelsea have handled problems like this badly before. Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah were both sold after struggling for minutes at Stamford Bridge, then went on to define the Premier League elsewhere. The club’s recent model has also relied on buying elite teenagers and holding their value on long contracts, which only works if those players actually develop.

For Alonso, this is the first big man-management test of his time in charge. Chelsea have won just two of their last six matches, which strengthens the case for experienced players. It also undercuts the argument that the current approach is working well enough to justify leaving a player of Estevao’s quality on the bench.

Estevao is still only 19 and in only his second season in Europe, and his coach has publicly said it is his responsibility to make it work. Alonso has made the promise in public. Unless Estevao starts getting real minutes before the January window opens, his place in Chelsea’s long-term plans will remain an open question.

Notes:
– **The headline:** The “could be happier” quote is real; Alonso said it after the Carabao Cup shootout defeat at Anfield. No outlet I found calls Estevao the “forgotten man” in its own words, so the headline is our framing.
– **Minutes and stats:** Reports give different minute totals (23, 34, 47 and 87) taken at different points in the season. I used 47 Premier League minutes from eight matches, from FootballTransfers today, because it is the most recent. The 2025-26 Premier League figures come from The Analyst.
– **From my own knowledge, not checked against today’s sources:** the “up to around £51m” fee, the winner against Liverpool and the goal against Barcelona in 2025, and the De Bruyne and Salah comparison. They are well documented, but you may want to check them before publishing.
– **Transfer talk:** PSG’s interest, Barcelona monitoring him and the loan option are press reports only. Nothing has been confirmed, and the article says so.
