Harriet Dart has reached the first WTA Tour singles final of her career. The 30-year-old British qualifier came from a set down to beat 16-year-old Chinese wildcard Sun Xinran 5-7 7-6 (7-1) 6-0 in the Guangzhou Open semi-finals.

The match lasted just under two and a half hours. In the second set Dart had to serve twice to stay in the tournament, then lost only one point in the tie-break. She did not drop a game in the deciding set. A tearful Dart said afterwards that reaching the final “means the world” to her.

From the brink to a bagel

For a set and a half, this looked like Sun’s day. The teenager is the reigning US Open junior champion and was playing in front of a home crowd. Dart served for the opening set at 5-4 but could not close it out, and Sun took the next three games to win it 7-5.

The second set was full of breaks. Dart broke early but was broken straight back, and twice she had to hold serve to stay in the match. Once she forced a tie-break, she took control and won it 7-1 to level the contest.

The third set was one-sided. Sun took a medical timeout for treatment on her left leg and struggled physically and emotionally late in the match. Dart won 28 of the 41 points played in the decider, finishing with a 6-0 set that sealed her place in Sunday’s final.

A week of hard-earned wins

Dart’s run in Guangzhou has been built on endurance. She came through two qualifying rounds before the main draw, so the semi-final win was her sixth straight victory of the week.

  • Qualifying: two wins to reach the main draw
  • First round: beat fellow qualifier Polina Prozorova
  • Second round: beat second seed Janice Tjen 6-4 3-6 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes
  • Quarter-final: beat fifth seed Paula Badosa 3-6 6-2 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes
  • Semi-final: beat Sun Xinran 5-7 7-6 (7-1) 6-0

The win over Badosa set the pattern for this week. Dart lost the first set, survived a scrappy second in which she converted only three of 12 break points, and failed to serve out the match at 5-3. She finally won it on Badosa’s 10th double fault. Against Sun she again fell behind and again found a way back.

After the Badosa match, Dart said: “It’s been a very long time since I’ve been in the business end of a WTA tournament, so I’m very proud of that.” Her previous WTA singles semi-final came at the 2024 Transylvania Open in Cluj, and she had never gone further until this week.

What it means for Dart and British tennis

Dart has long been better known for her doubles. She has reached six WTA doubles finals and won two titles. In singles, her best results have mostly come at Grand Slams, including a run to the third round of Wimbledon in 2024. Reaching a tour-level singles final at 30 is the biggest breakthrough of her career.

The win also matters for her ranking. She has climbed 14 places to 101st in the live WTA rankings, and winning the title would guarantee her return to the top 100. That would bring direct entry into Grand Slam main draws in 2027, so she would no longer need to come through qualifying.

In the final she will face either Austria’s Lilli Tagger or Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo. Dart will go in as a qualifier who has already beaten the second and fifth seeds this week.

Her run continues a strong Asian swing for British women. Katie Boulter reached the semi-finals of the Japan Open, and Sonay Kartal made the final in Wuhan. A first title in Guangzhou would make Dart the latest British player to go deep in an autumn event.

Whatever happens in the final, Dart’s week has already made her career. She has twice recovered from a set down against seeded or rising opponents, and her ranking is back on the edge of the top 100.

– **Other semi-final:** I couldn’t confirm its result, so the article names both possible opponents.
– **Kartal:** She lost the Wuhan final to Chwalinska, according to the facts verified yesterday.
