Northamptonshire have signed wicketkeeper-batter Finlay Bean from Yorkshire on a three-year deal that keeps him at Wantage Road until at least the end of the 2029 season. The 24-year-old left-hander has scored 2,649 first-class runs at 33.53, including seven centuries. Yorkshire agreed to release him early from a contract that ran until the end of 2028.
The move was announced on Tuesday, 3 November. It ends a stay at Headingley that began when Bean came through Yorkshire’s academy. He played 48 first-class matches for the White Rose, but by the end of the 2026 season he was no longer in their Championship side.
From record-breaker to Second XI
Bean was born in Harrogate and first drew wide attention in June 2022. Playing for Yorkshire’s Second XI against Nottinghamshire, he made 441, the highest individual score in Second XI Championship history. That beat the 322 Marcus Trescothick made for Somerset against Warwickshire at Taunton in 1997, and it earned him his first professional contract.
He made his first-class debut against Lancashire at Old Trafford in September 2022 and moved into the senior side quickly. His maiden first-class hundred, 118 against Leicestershire, came in April 2023. He followed it with 135 against Worcestershire that July and 173 against Glamorgan in May 2024. His best score so far is 224 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in June 2025, his first double century.
Those numbers made him a regular in Yorkshire’s top order. In March 2026 he signed a two-year extension to the end of 2028. Within weeks, though, his place had gone. He averaged 25.22 in the first block of County Championship matches and was dropped, with Will Luxton taking his place as Adam Lyth’s opening partner. Bean’s last Championship appearance came in May, and he finished the red-ball summer in the Second XI.
Yorkshire’s general manager of cricket, Gavin Hamilton, said the club understood why he wanted to leave.
“We’ve had some really honest conversations with Fin over the last year or so and during that time he has consistently pushed for regular cricket, as he should,” Hamilton said. “Fin has been a brilliant player for Yorkshire and has been a great person to have in the changing room too. We’d have been delighted to see him fulfil the remainder of his contract, but we understand and respect his ambition.”
Why Northants moved
Darren Lehmann, Northamptonshire’s head coach, said the club had been tracking Bean for some time. He said Bean had “been on our radar for a while, so I’m really pleased to secure him on a long-term deal where he’ll hopefully develop and become a brilliant asset to the team.”
The three-year length of the contract shows the club is investing in him for the long term. Bean is still young enough to improve, and he arrives with a solid record:
- First-class: 48 matches, 2,649 runs at 33.53, seven hundreds, six fifties, top score 224
- List A: 30 matches, 517 runs at 21.54, top score 102 not out off 57 balls at Scarborough in the One-Day Cup
- Behind the stumps: 59 first-class catches, plus 30 catches and a stumping in List A cricket
His wicketkeeping gives Lehmann more options. Bean can open the batting, play in the middle order or keep wicket, which matters to a Division Two squad that cannot carry many specialists. He has not yet played senior T20 cricket, so the Blast is an obvious area where he could develop.
“I’m extremely delighted to be joining Northamptonshire,” Bean said. “I can’t wait to get started and I’m looking forward to showing the fans what I can do. I can see through the Blast success and County Championship performances that it’s a great group to be part of and hopefully we can continue that next season.”
He added: “It’s an exciting time for me; working under Darren and the rest of the coaching staff, I’m looking forward to developing my game and making a big contribution.”
What comes next
Bean’s move follows a familiar pattern in county cricket. A player squeezed out at one of the big Division One clubs often goes to a smaller county for regular first-team cricket. Northamptonshire have long benefited from this kind of transfer, giving overlooked players a fresh start and the chance to play every week.
For Bean, the next two seasons matter most. At 24, he has already shown he can score heavily at first-class level: before 2026, his hundreds against Glamorgan and Nottinghamshire made him one of the more promising young openers in the country. His main task now is to rebuild his consistency after a difficult summer.
For Yorkshire, his departure means their opening options in 2027 will depend on Lyth and Luxton, with less cover if either loses form.
Northamptonshire’s pre-season preparations begin in the spring. Bean is expected to compete for a top-order place straight away, and possibly for the gloves as well.

I checked this story before writing it, and it’s real. Northants announced the signing on 3 November 2026. A few notes on what I left out:
– **The 441 record:** this detail only appears on Wikipedia. The news reports don’t mention it, so it may be worth a quick check before publishing.
– **Not included:** I left out three claims that only CricTracker made and I couldn’t confirm. They were that his 102* was Yorkshire’s fastest one-day hundred, that he scored 983 runs in 2023, and that he shared 27 opening stands of 50 or more with Lyth.
– **Hamilton’s quote:** Cricinfo’s page wouldn’t load, so this comes second-hand from CricTracker, which says it is quoting Cricinfo.
I’ve saved the checked facts to memory for future briefs.
